Our Plastic Loch Ness Monster, Nessie This fun-looking replica of Nessie, the Loch Ness monster is painted green and is 3 1/2 inches long. It comes with the suggestion of a scaly reptilian skin, and is balanced to stand by four large paddle-like flippers. This cryptozoological creature allegedly lives today in Scotland in Loch (lake) Ness. It is firmly entrenched in modern lore due to numerous photographs and reported sightings. It is believed that Nessie is a species of plesiosaur, a remaining member of a water-going reptile which lived during the late Triassic Period (250 mya) and became extinct during the late Cretaceous Period (65 mya). Of course, the scientific community has generally debunked the authenticity of this claim. Most photographs of the animal have proven to be forgeries or illusions, the verbal accounts unreliable, and any scientific foundation fraught with error. Recent imaging of the lake using sonar has turned up nothing. Some pleisiosaurs were live breeders like present day whales and dolphins, but others still maintained their reptilian characteristic of land-going egg layers. Yet, no mates or offspring nor any eggs have ever been reported. Most perplexing is that Loch Ness is only 10,000 years old and dates from the Ice Age. How, then, a plesiosaur species could even live there is highly problematic. Nevertheless, information which people consider unbelieveable or improbable sometimes turns into proven fact down the line. Use our replica for displays, dioramas, cake decorations, and party favors or gags. See all our other cryptozoology items and also learn more about plesiosaurs from our section on extinct reptiles.
