They usually are about six inches to nearly a foot long and weigh about a pound to a pound in half though they can be bigger. The two main types are white crappie and back crappie. The replica above illustrates the black crappie version as it depicts the whitish body with black spots. Such crappie can also be predominately grey in coloring. On the other hand, the white crappie are usually much lighter in overall color with distinctive darker bands running down the sides of the fish. It is not uncommon to see both types schooling together in a waterway. Like their sunfish brethren, they also eat various insects as well as crayfish and small shrimp. Walleye and muskellunge, among other large fish, are their natural predators and crappie will eat their young. Crappie tend to congregate around weed beds, logs, and under man-made structures such as boat docks and fishing piers during the day before moving into shallow waters along the banks of rivers and streams in the early evening around dusk. As the light fades from the day as well as early morning around dawn are their two main feeding times. As such, they are a favorite of fisherman and can be caught relatively easily through the use of natural as well as artificial baits. Crappie article by Kevin Tipple
