Dimetrodon may look something like a dinosaur, but it is a completely different animal. For one thing, Dimetrodon lived during the Early Permian Period about 295-272 million years ago and became extinct about 60 million years before dinosaurs ever appeared. Over a dozen species of dimetrodon have been identified since the genus was described in 1878. Most have been found in the United States in Oklahoma and Texas, although Dimetrodon fossils have also been found in Germany in more recent years. The species range in size from about 2 feet to 15 feet long. Dimetrodon was one of the top predators in the Permian food chain, feeding on fish, reptiles, and amphibians.
