Since then other hadrosaurs have been found in North Dakota including one in 1999 which even had preserved muscle mass. Many other dinosaur species have been uncovered but none ever have the intricate traces of skin and matter as these hadosaurs have. Hadrosaurs are also known as duck-billed dinosaurs and have gotten their name from their crested head which is similar to the shape of a duck's head. Hadrosaurs lived during the upper Cretaceous Period (100 -66 mya) and were widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They were herbivorous animals and tended to gather around shallow lakes to feed on abundant plant life. There is much debate as to whether the hadrosaur was a grazer or plucked leaves as well. Also it appears that the hadrosaurs may have left the lake bottom land for higher grounds to raise their young. Many fossilized egg clutches have been found and analyzed. Most fascinating is the question why hadrosaur skin has been found and not skins from other dinosaurs? Is it that hadrosaurs were more prevelant or did hadrosaurs die in envronments more conducive to fossilization? Is their skin any different from those of other dinosaurs? This last question is addressed in a fascinating article appearing in an issue of Smithsonian magazine which is worth reading.
