Product Description
Our Flying Fish Replica This lovely-looking flying fish toy replica is well designed and is 6 inches long and 6 1/2 inches across the fins. It is made of hard plastic and is sturdy and durable. Our fish has a gray tail, but the large aerodynamically designed pectoral fins are translucent with gray highlights. Like many flying fish, the body is silvery gray and bright blue along the top. Flying fish don't actually fly, but propel themselves out of the water and glide. Their tail moves about 70 times a second, then the fish spreads its fins upwards to provide lift. When airborne, the flying fish senses air current and adjusts its wings suddenly to maximize greater time out of the water. This is a great adaptation to protect it from predatory fish and is a source of frustration for hungry sea birds. Flying fish can be found in all the oceans but are most prevalent in the waters of off Barbados. See our large inventory of saltwater fish replicas and aquatic sealife. This item is useful for displays, dioramas, science and school projects and decorations.
The Exocoetidae are a family of marine fishes in the order Beloniformes class Actinopterygii. Fish of this family are known as flying fish. About 64 species are grouped in seven to nine genera. Flying fish can make powerful, self-propelled leaps out of water into air, where their long, wing-like fins enable gliding flight for considerable distances above the water's surface. This uncommon ability is a natural defence mechanism to evade predators.
