Arctic foxes can live in the coldest of places in the Arctic tundra, which includes Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. The foxes' adaptations for freezing climates include heavy, white coats and a good layer of fat. They can easily withstand temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. According to the Woodland Park Zoo, they begin to shiver at minus 94 degrees! Not only is the fox insulated by its fur and fat, but it has densely-furred paws and a heat-holding compact body shape. The fox wraps itself in its thick tail for added protection. Not only does the tail keep the fox's nose warm, but just like your cat's tail, a fox's tail helps the animal stay balanced. The fox's long fur is shed in spring, and it acquires a darker coat for camouflage in summer. Arctic foxes are known to have two distinct color variations, with the "white morphs" typically living farther north than their "blue morph" (darker) cousins. In the wild, Arctic foxes making it to adulthood live about three years, while in captivity they may live between 6 and10 years.
