Grasshopper antennae are considerably shorter than their body and they have mandibles that rip and tear their food. They are served as food on skewers in Chinese markets and are often used in soups in Africa. Grasshoppers are also prevalent in food markets in central and southern Mexico. While a number of species of grasshopper can be pests, the ones that immediately come to mind are locusts. Some short-horned grasshoppers in the family Acrididae will swarm, and these locusts can be extremely destructive to food crops as they eat nearly everything in their path.
