Product Description
Our Soft Rubber Iguana This soft rubbery plastic and colorful iguana toy gives a rough scaly appearance and is realistic in its green color. Wonderfully proportioned, it is 5 inches long with a curved, distinct tail. It will fit nicely into dioramas about rain forests and Central and South America. Our iguana may be useful for a school project, as part of an educational display or as a novelty item. Check out our other iguana and reptile or amphibian toys and gifts.
While adult green - or common - iguanas (Iguana iguana) can reach an impressive 5-6 feet in length, they start out weighing less than an ounce and have to fend for themselves right out of the egg. Iguanas are native to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, places known for heat and fierce predators. Everything, it seems, wants to eat iguanas: birds of prey, snakes, raccoons, coati mundis, jungle cats, caimans, and crocodiles. Since only 2.6% of hatchlings survive to adulthood, it pays to have some serious survival skills to increase the odds in their favor. In addition to natural camouflage, green iguanas possess very sharp teeth and powerful tails. Iguanas' tails can be used to whip attacking predators, or, in a worst case scenario, left behind in the jaws or talons of hungry predators (who will hopefully be satisfied with a snack instead of a meal) while the lizard runs to safety. Along with having regenerative properties, the tails are also useful in propelling iguanas through water. Iguanas are natural swimmers, often using water as an escape route. When swimming, they let their legs go limp and use their tails as thrusters. They can stay submerged for up to half an hour, hiding out on the bottom of lakes or streams waiting for overly interested predators to lose interest and seek other prey. Iguanas are popular as pets because they are generally inexpensive, and they start out small and cute. But most people are ill-equipped to deal with the needs of a growing iguana. The cages they start out in are quickly outgrown and their diets are often filled with inappropriate sources of protein which can lead to serious health problems and a shortened life span. Iguanas are primarily herbivores and generally only eat leaves, flowers, and fruit in the wild. For pet owners, finding the proper balance of nutrients can be very difficult. The frustrations of owning an iguana have led many pet owners to abandon their pets. Florida now has a population of released iguanas. Since the reptiles only thrive in temperatures of 79-95 degrees Fahrenheit, they can go into a stupor in lower temperatures. During one Florida winter of unusually cold nights, many of them fell out of the trees in what newscasters called a "frozen iguana shower." Fortunately, iguanas can fall between 40-50 feet and remain unharmed, so when many of them warmed up, they were able to return to life as usual.
