Our Plastic Jackalope This cryptozoological creature, the jackalope, is an example of a fanciful hybrid animal. Our replica is 2 1/2 inches tall and is painted a shiny yellow brown with detailed fur. It fits in the tradition in which many cultures tell of strange magical spirits that inhabit the bodies of a combination of animals. This can be found through time from people as diverse as native North American Indians to the mythology of the Greeks and the Romans, where chimeras and griffins inhabited the woods at the will of the gods. Stories of horned rabbits exist in many cultures from Central American Aztecs to European peoples from early Norway or Germany. It is argued that actual sightings of the jackalope are understandable as the result of a confusion with a strange rabbit disease where tumorous growths appear on the animal's head. In any case, our modern Western jackalope (supposedly part antelope and part jackrabbit) that can speak English and likes to drink whiskey, don't appear to even carry a similar deep, symbolic meaning as the stories which are central to many of the tales of other cultures. Whereas there has been much disputable scientific evidence for the existence of yetis, bigfoots, sasquatch and even the Loch Ness monster, in the case of the jackalope, we can thank its alleged presence to the creativity of fun-loving taxidermists, to hucksters and storytellers.
