Lemurs are prosimians. They are primates, but are not as highly evolved as monkeys or great apes. One easily recognizable feature that differs between the lemurs and other primates is the long, almost dog-like nose of the lemurs. Whereas the other primates rely more heavily on vision and hearing, lemurs rely more on their sense of smell. There are 11 species of true lemurs and 7 species of dwarf lemurs. Lemurs are found only in the woodlands on the island of Madagascar, and the Comoro Islands near Madagascar. The black-and-white ruffed lemur is known for its striking coloring and thick neck ruff. The photos below were taken by Sheryl Todd at Dudley Zoo, UK: The day we were at the zoo it was chilly, and the lemurs were huddled on the corrugated tin roof looking for some sun for basking. The eyes are unbelievably piercing, and look at those interesting long toes! Amy and I both thought this lemur's expressive face looked like her part-corgi dog, Jake. It was worth a trip to Dudley Zoo in the Midlands just to warch the lemurs, although we also saw many other wonderful animals, of course. Thanks, Dudley Zoo! I hope to come back someday.
