Product Description
Our Mosquito Life Cycle Kit Our mosquito life cycle set comes in a blister pack attached to a nine-inch tall card. The back of the card describes the four stages of mosquito development in English, French, Spanish, and German. The four plastic models can be removed from the card for closer study. They include: egg mass (1 3/4 inches long), larva (2 1/2 inches long), pupa (1 1/2 inches long), and adult mosquito (almost 3 inches long and more than 3 inches wide across the legs). Our lifecycle set is made by Safari, Ltd., one of the best names in accurate and scientific animal replicas. Each stage of the life cycle is detailed with a large enough model that you can pass the models around the classroom or give them to your kids to study up close where they can learn in a very memorable, hands-on way about the life cycle of the mosquito. What a fun way to learn biology! You could even use these high-quality replicas as a museum display. Like their brethren flies, mosquitoes go through the four stages of egg, larva, pupa and adult. They can breed by placing eggs on plants, in water in lakes or puddles, marshes, salt marshes, and more depending on the species. They are mainly controlled by removing sources such as stagnant water and the use of insecticides and natural predators such as dragonflies. Some scientists believe that mosquitoes could be completely eradicated from the planet with zero ecological impact. About Larvae The larva (singular; the plural is larvae) is one of the stages in the life cycle of many animals, including insects, amphibians, and many small sea creatures. For example, the caterpillar eventually turns into a butterfly, and mosquito larvae turn int adult mosquitoes. Usually that change is propelled by the larvae eating vast amounts of food before the metamorphis event. Often the larva form lives in a distinct environment separate from the adults which might not only compete with it for food, but may see the larvae as a possible food source. For example, tadpoles live continuously in the water while adult frogs are able to venture away from the water for extended periods of time. Dragonflies may spend up to five years in the larval stage as naiads, staying submerged and eating what comes through the water to them before finally climbing up a reed or some other suitable surface and metamorphosing into a winged creature.
