Blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna) are one of the most popular birds for parrot lovers to own. They are highly intelligent and loving and can be trained to do tricks and mimic sounds. They can be trained to perch, but shouldn't be caged because it can destroy their tail feathers. Because of their popularity as pets, however, their numbers have drastically decreased in their natural habitat in the rainforests of Panama and South America due to illegal trapping. This is a sad and senseless happening since they can be bred in captivity. In nature, macaws can be found living in family groups of up to 100 members, nesting high in the cavities of dead trees. They mate for life, and will lay 2 to 3 eggs at a time, raising only the single strongest chick and leaving the others to die. Their diet consists of fruits, nuts, and seeds, with an occasional stop at a clay lick for minerals and salt. The blue and yellow macaw is one of the largest parrots in the world, growing up to 36 inches in length and weighing up to 4 pounds. Their wingspan can reach 45 inches across. Some have been known to live for up to 60 years! If you're going to own one of these beautiful birds, you'd better make sure you're fully committed to having one for a lifelong companion. Blue and yellow macaw text by Debbie Turpin
