The mountain gorilla is one of the two subspecies of the eastern gorilla, and are descendants of ancestral monkeys and apes found in Africa and Arabia. Males, at a mean weight of 195 kg (430 lb) usually weigh twice as much as the females, at a mean of 100 kg (220 lb). The mountain gorilla is primarily a herbivore; the majority of its diet is composed of the leaves, shoots and stems. It also feeds on bark, roots, flowers, and fruit, as well as small invertebrates. Listed as critically endangered by the IUCN, as of September 2016 only an estimated 880 mountain gorillas remain.
