The Northern Black Racer, scientifically known as Coluber constrictor constrictor, is a fascinating and common non-venomous snake found in the eastern half of Tennessee, distinguishing it from its close relative, the Southern Black Racer (Coluber constrictor priapus) which inhabits the western half of the state. Despite their names, these subspecies look quite alike, and their differentiation often requires internal anatomical examination. Often simply called "Black Racers," "American Black Snakes," or "Blue Racers" (particularly in areas where blue morphs are present), these slender and agile reptiles are easily recognizable by their uniform glossy black bodies, which can reach lengths of three to five feet, though some individuals may exceed six feet. Their bellies typically range from dark gray to black, often with a distinct white patch on their chin and throat. Unlike some other black snakes like the Eastern Ratsnake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis), racers have smooth, unkeeled scales, giving them a sleek appearance. Juvenile racers, however, present a strikingly different coloration, featuring a tan or grayish base with a series of dark brown or reddish blotches down their backs, a pattern that gradually fades to the adult black as they mature. Black Racers are highly active diurnal hunters, meaning they are active during the day, and their incredible speed is the source of their common name. While their scientific name constrictor might suggest otherwise, they do not kill their prey by constriction; instead, they typically pin their victim with a loop of their body and swallow it alive. Their diet is incredibly varied, making them important predators in their ecosystem, consuming everything from insects, frogs, toads, lizards, and other snakes to small birds, rodents, and bird eggs, contributing to the natural control of various pest populations. They are adaptable to a wide range of habitats, preferring open areas such as meadows, old fields, agricultural lands, and forest edges, making them a common sight in Tennessee's diverse landscapes. When threatened, they are quick to flee, but if cornered, they will strike aggressively and may even vibrate their tail in dry leaves, mimicking a rattlesnake's warning.
