Our figurine represents the orangutan, which has been divided into two species as of 1996. These are the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). The Bornean orangutan has been further classified into three subspecies. Orangutans are now found only in northern Sumatra and Borneo. In the Malay language, orangutan means "man of the forest." The biggest problem for orangutans in the wild is loss of forest habitat. The species is now fully protected by law throughout its range, but enforcement is difficult in remote areas.
