While there are several different types of parrots that have green plumage, the visually stunning male eclectus wins the appearance competition hands down. Known for their orange beak with bright green plumage, the male eclectus is visually far different than the female version with its mostly bright red plumage and black beak. Native to Australia, New Guinea, Maluku Islands, and the Solomon Islands, the bird is about 14 inches in length and typically nests in the hollows in large trees in the rainforest. Because of their long digestive tracts, in the wild they eat fruits, figs, unripe nuts, flower and leaf buds, as well as some seeds. In captivity they need that same diet as it is high in fiber and fresh fruits. They also need plenty of room to exercise outside of their cage in a bird friendly environment. They are highly intelligent birds with their own unique and distinctive personalities. Such birds are very vocal creatures and highly trainable in terms of language. As the eclectus is so social, the bird is highly sensitive so there can be issues if the bird feels neglected by its owner. Therefore, it is important that you, as a responsible and caring owner, have the time and space requirements for the needs of the bird. In the right situation, this bird can be a welcome pet addition to your home.
