About Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) Bears on ice The ultimate ice skating champion is the polar bear. Without the need for skates, this animal has learned to slide easily across a sheet of ice on his back, walk rather wobbly on all four hairy feet, or glide flat on his belly with his long neck stretched out in front of him. The world of the polar bear is different than the world in which most humans live. For one thing, it is very cold where the polar bear lives. The polar bear needs to take advantage of the long days in the Arctic summer so he can hunt for food in order to build up a layer of blubber to sustain him when he hibernates through the harsh winters. This clever animal can break through the thick ice using his keen sense of smell to detect a fish or even larger animals. He has been known to eat walrus, beluga whale and bowhead whale. The mother bear has been known to burrow deep into the ice to hibernate. She then sleeps through the winter and is barely aware that the cubs have been born. In the springtime when the cubs begin to move around, the mother wakes up. She teaches the cubs to fish, swim and catch their food. Polar bears are the largest of the carnivores. These animals were then declared as a threatened species. Although it was difficult to know exactly how many bears were alive in the wild at any one time, it was estimated there were only a few thousand bears left. As of 2008, conservation efforts had been fairly successful, although the World Conservation Union (IUCN) estimated there were only between 20,0000-25,000 surviving pairs. The fear is that without continued efforts at conservation this number will drop rapidly. The polar bears are threatened by unrestrained hunting and habitat encroachment. Most significantly, the worst peril facing the polar bears is the loss of the bear's range due to the melting of the ice sheet. This means they have no predators to worry about. The biggest risk today for the polar bear is climate change. Melting of the ice sheet means that polar bears spend more and more time on dry land. So although these bears have increased in number since the 1970s thanks to conservationists, the destruction of their habitat is still the biggest problem facing the bear today. If the ice sheet continues to melt, forcing the bear on dry land, then how will the bear continue to be the ultimate ice skater? Polar Bear text copyright
