Quetzals are members of a family of birds called trogons (Trogonidae). This family includes 39 species, but only six of them are quetzals. Trogons are on a relatively isolated evolutionary branch and have no close relatives. They have a very long fossil record, going back as far as the Eocene, when their lineage began in Africa about 35 million years ago. Various species of trogon still live in Africa and other equatorial regions around the world, but quetzals live only in the Americas. Although trogon taxonomy has confused scientists, it appears that they have no close relatives. They do have a very long fossil record, going all the way back to the Eocene. Trogons are noted for their long tail plumage and often for the brilliant coloring of the males. They are often reclusive and difficult to study.
