Product Description
Use our realistic SAILFISH toy miniature for displays, dioramas, science projects, cake decorations, collections and as a fun toy.
Our Plastic Sailfish This simple replica of a sailfish is 3 1/2 inches long, made of solid, flexible, sturdy plastic, and conveys a realistic representation of an actual sailfish. It has a white body with a Prussian blue and black erect dorsal fin. It has a long, firm bill which is typical of billfish, a grouping which includes swordfish and marlin. This sailfish model can be useful in displays, dioramas, as a decoration on cakes or cupcakes, as an example in a science project or as part of a fish collection. Give it as a keepsake to a fisherman or as a toy for a child. It may work as a remembrance for "the one that got away!" About Sailfish The sailfish is known as a billfish and belongs in the same family as marlin and spearfish. These three are closely related to the swordfish, which is in a family all by itself. They all are characterized by having an elongated bill called a rostrum. This large predatory, migrating fish can be found in all oceans, but tends to be most prevalent in warmer waters. Billfish, including the sailfish, use their bill as a slashing tool. It finds a cluster of school fish such as anchovies and swims through it at high speeds swinging its rostrum from left to right and thereby stuns the small prey. The sailfish then goes back to feed on the injured or dead fish. It does not spear its food as was often believed, but gulps its prey down whole since it hardly has teeth. Sailfish and marlin have been seen tossing a dead fish in the air and then spearing it, but this seems to be a form of play. What is most amazing about sailfish is the speed at which they can swim. A sailfish has been clocked at 68 mph which is equal to that of a cheetah. It is the fastest fish in the water but still can be hunted and trapped by schools of sharks. Sailfish are a sportfish and its population has been threatened by overfishing.
