The scarab is a symbol of the cycle of life in the ancient Egyptian belief system. Scarabs were inspired by the lowly dung beetle, common in the deserts and plains of Northern Africa, and came to be used in carvings, jewelry, household goods, and as magical and religious amulets. The "scarab" itself is not an actual beetle.
