Harp Seal Toy 3"
Most species of seal can be found in arctic regions. These marine mammals have hair or fur and a thick layer of fat, called blubber, which protects them from the bitter cold, harsh weather and icy waters. Unlike sea lions, true seals don't have visible ears. The small holes that lead to the ear close, as do their noses, when the seal is underwater, yet they can hear just as well in the water as out. Their large, round eyes provide excellent vision both under and above water. Their coarse, sensitive whiskers are continuously growing. In murky waters these whiskers are used to detect fish by sweeping the upper lip back and forth. While seals generally stay underwater only a couple of minutes and do not dive very deep, some seals, when hunting they can stay under for as long as 30 minutes and dive as deep as 1,000 feet. Although they spend most of their time in the water, they do come on land to bask in the sun, especially during mating season. There are 17 seal species ranging in size from 4 feet long and 140 pounds to 20 feet long and 4 tons.
