Named in honor Valeria Blaney, who collected the first specimen in Maryland, the smooth earth snake (Virginia valeriae) is a nonvenomous snake found throughout the eastern United States. Smooth earth snakes are 7 - 10 inches long, and prefer to remain buried in loose soil or leaf litter. Smooth earth snakes feed primarily on worms and slugs, and are not well-adapted defensively. This species of snake is therefore not aggressive towards humans...they typically flee the approach of any large creature. While they do have teeth, the small size of the teeth, and the snake itself, makes them harmless to humans. If handled, the snake will defensively defecate to confuse a predator and make the snake less tasty.
Given its lack of sufficient defense mechanisms against larger animals, the smooth earth snake is generally not aggressive towards humans and is harmless if encountered. While it does have teeth, the size of the mouth and teeth make any strikes against humans superficial at worst. It may defecate as a defense mechanism to make itself less palatable to would-be predators. If necessary, it can be safely picked up by hand and relocated.
