Product Description
This realistic-looking plastic taipan snake miniature is made of somewhat flexible plastic and shows details such as scales and eyes. This replica has rough skin suggesting the small scales of the body and wider scales along the belly. The top of the snake is a coppery reddish-brown, and the underside is a rich cream color. The eyes are painted black. This small plastic taipan replica fits into a shoebox diorama about Australia or Australasia. It can also make a great collectible for snake- and reptile-lovers. It is 4 inches long as seen above, from the curve near the head to the curve in the tail. Add this deadly venomous predator to your animal collection or school project! The taipan snake is found on the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia, and in Papua New Guinea. This highly venomous snake was named by anthropologist Donald Thomson from the name given to it by the Wik-Mungkan people native to the area. There are three known species of taipan: the coastal taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus), the inland taipan (Oxyturanus microlepidotus), and the Central Ranges taipan (Oxyuranus temporalis), the most recently discovered of the three. The coastal taipan, found along the northeastern coast of Queensland, and the Papuan taipan (O. s. canni), is found on the southern coast of Papua New Guinea, are referred to as subspecies of the taipan. These snakes are also called fierce snakes or small-scaled snakes, and tend to be reclusive and rare. Their environment often consists remote rocky areas where they can easily hide. Taipans make the top 10 list of poisonous snakes because of their highly toxic venom. These snakes are so venomous that their bite can kill an adult himan within 45 minutes. Because in Australia the taipan is known to grow as long as 9.8 feet, it is Australia's longest venomous snake. Taipan snakes have been seen not only in Northern New South Wales but also in the coastal heaths, grasslands, and cane fields in the far north of the Australian continent. Residents and farmers need to be wary of their presence around grassy dunes as well as cultivated areas. Taipan snakes eat lizards and small mammals such as rats and bandicoots. After injecting their prey with toxic venom, the prey is allowed to pull away and try to escape, but because the snake now has the scent of its victim, it will track the prey until it dies, then swallow the prey whole, maintaining a grip until it can be ingested. Thanks to improved first aid and hospitalization, surprisingly few snake handlers have been killed by taipans in modern history.
