The largest of the toothed whales, the sperm whale can grow up to 59 feet and weight up to 45 tons. Mature females are about 2/3 the size of males. The sperm whale's distinctive huge squarish head accounts for at least 1/3 of it's length and projects well beyond its lower jaw. There are 18-25 large cone-shaped teeth on each side of the lower jaw. On the upper jaw are a series of sockets into which the lower teeth fit. The whale's bushy blow is projected forward from the single blowhole located forward on the left side of the head. Their wrinkled, shriveled looking body is dark, brownish gray with light streaks, spots and scratches. It has white skin around it's mouth and a lighter gray underside which may have white patches. Spermaceti oil fills a mass of web-like tubes, called the spermaceti organ, inside the whale's head. It is believed that this organ helps to maintain buoyancy and enables the whale to dive to depths of over 3,300 feet making it one of the deepest diving cetaceans.
