The western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), is one of the most characteristic birds of the North American grasslands. Meadowlarks are members of the blackbird family. Other blackbird species may have non-black females, but meadowlarks are unique in not having mostly black colors on the male. Physical description: The western meadowlark is a bird with brownish upperparts and wings, yellow underparts with a bold, black V across the breast, a pale supercilium, and a short tail with white outermost tail feathers. Its bill is rather long and pointed and their heads have light brown and black stripes. Diet: Western meadowlarks are ground feeders. These birds eat both grain and weed seeds along with insects. Western meadowlarks show a distinctly seasonal dietary pattern, searching for grain during winter and early spring, and for weed seeds in the fall. In late spring and summer they search through the soil and underneath dirt clods and manure piles looking for beetles, ants, cutworms, grasshoppers, and crickets.
