The Asian tapir, also known as the Malayan tapir, is the only tapir native to Asia. It is also the largest of the four (or five) species of tapirs and is anywhere from just under six feet to nearly 8 feet in length. This does not include their stubby tails which are very short at only two to three inches. That means our model is just about the length of their tails while also being considerably lighter. They usually weigh between 550 and 710 pounds with females being bigger than males. These herbivores are territorial and it was long said they were loners by nature, although more recently it appears that they live in bonded pairs. Since they may eat and sleep at some distance from each other in the wild, the pairing may not often be observed. They have very poor eyesight and make up for that with their excellent senses of smell and hearing. In theory they are very well camouflaged for their environment as they have a black coat with a light or white area that runs from just behind their front shoulders to the back end. That pattern is hard to detect especially when they lie down to sleep. The front feet have four toes while the back feet have three toes each. Most active around dusk and dawn they prefer to live near water sources and eat the shoots and leaves of more than 115 species of plants. Like other tapirs they are in real trouble mainly due to the actions of humans.
