Toucans (family Ramphastidae) are colorful birds which have beaks almost as large as their bodies, and often more colorful then their plumage. Toucans use their beaks to pluck fruit from thorny branches, and sometimes to "fence" with each other, in play, and for territory. There are 37-42 species of toucans known today, found from southern Mexico, South through Central America, through Colombia, and south to southern Argentina. Toucans are victims of the illegal pet trade industry and are stolen from their natural habitats and sold on the international market. Toucan research by Joslyn Biggins
