Because this beautifully-detailed plastic woolly mammoth replica is made by CollectA, you can be assured of its authenticity and quality materials. We were excited to add a calf woolly mammoth to our collection, because it is so hard to find extinct mammals other than large mammoths. Just looking at it and, by studying its detailed features makes a person want to learn more about the animals of earlier ages - the ancestors of our modern mammals, or at least their distant cousins. This beautiful model shows the baby mammoth's distinct tusks and bright, shiny eyes and toes. Our mammoth calf measures 3 1/4 inches long. The woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is an extinct species of mammoth that lived during the Pleistocene epoch, and was one of the last in a line of mammoth species. Its closest extant relative is the Asian elephant. The woolly mammoth was roughly the same size as modern African elephants. The woolly mammoth was well adapted to the cold environment during the last ice age. It was covered in fur, with an outer covering of long guard hairs and a shorter undercoat. A newborn calf weighed about 90 kilograms (200 lb).
